Clist & Rattle, Environmentally Conscious
Operating in the Retail Motor Trade selling and maintaining new and used cars may, on the face of it, appear wholly incompatible with today’s priorities of reducing pollution and in particular CO2 emissions.
Yet, humans are responsible for a mere 3.5% of total global CO2 emissions and cars represent one seventh of that figure; just one half of one percent of global emissions.
UK figures show that in 2005, transport in the UK accounted for ¼ of CO2 output with only 18% being attributable to road traffic (including HGV, busses and light commercial vehicles. Public transport consumes 60% more energy then cars and catching a diesel train is twice as polluting as travelling by car for the average family.
Despite all this car manufacturers have taken their roles very seriously in recent years, reducing the average new car CO2 emissions by 13% over the last decade saving an estimated one million tonnes of CO2.
New generation diesels emit 95% less soot than those made 15 years ago and each car made in Britain requires half the energy to produce than it did just 5 years ago, saving an estimated 700 000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
At Clist & Rattle we offer new and used cars from manufacturers making greener cars than ever before.
Skoda, for example, manufactures the lowest emitting MPV in the UK today. The 1.4 Tdi Roomster emits just 135g/km. The average emission of the whole range of Skodas is 152g/km and the new Fabia Estate Greenline emits just 109g/km in both hatch and estate form.
Renault have recently launched their eco2 initiative. It is committed to protecting the environment and offers a range of vehicles that are both economical and ecologically sound. Renault plans to rank amongst the world's top three car manufacturers concerning CO2 emissions with 1,000,000 vehicles sold by 2008 emitting less than 140 g CO2/km, a third of which will emit less than 120 g CO2/km. For example a new Clio 1.5 dCi emits just 117g/km.
Daihatsu have always specialised in the smaller car market and the new Sirion is no exception to this. It has low emissions which mean that the annual Road Tax on the Sirion 1.0 litre is only £35 per year. Even the Terios 4 x 4 only costs £170 to tax; compare this to any other four wheel drive “gas guzzler” and you will see that Daihatsu offer a real alternative allowing style and practicality to be perfectly compatible with environmentally friendly motoring.
All these figures may not mean much to the average motorist but the latest budget has sharpened the focus on emissions as the price of the road fund licence on all cars is wholly dependant on the CO2 emissions band. So, if your new car only emits 135g/km you will pay only £35 a year.
So, the cars we sell are amongst the greenest and cleanest on the market. But what can we do to help?
Well, we have always had a policy of minimising our impact on our environment. We recognise and comply with all relevant environmental legislation. We source, wherever possible, from companies that support this policy.
We have invested heavily in modern technologies, for example our body repair facility has used more water-borne paint since 2003 rather than solvent bases materials.
We are now implementing a waste segregation policy which will significantly reduce the amount of waste we send to land-fill and enable our partners to recycle even more of our by-products.
